Barnes Construction hosted an online presentation of construction progress at this prestigious Cambridge development.

Phase (1b) is part of Clare College’s restoration and renewal of Old Court to protect and conserve this famous Grade I Listed building and ensure that it meets the needs of 21st Century education. The works include the refurbishment and extension of the College’s main kitchen and catering facilities, including improved access, egress and circulation space which has been a monumental logistical challenge, carried out by utilising the small slither of land between Old Court and the neighbouring Trinity Hall to create the new River Room, toilets and circulation space, and a new glazed viewing platform.

The laminated oak frame will be assembled on site following a complex sequence of groundworks to create new service trenches, retaining features and using thrust bored drainage whilst balancing the operational requirements of the live and neighbouring Colleges, heritage impact and safely traversing and co-ordinating temporary works conundrums. The new facilities will provide the College with first-class catering and dining facilities to ensure that it retains its prominence at the heart of Cambridge.

Witherford Watson Mann Architects will be providing an introduction to the scheme, followed by Barnes Construction’s drone footage to highlight the logistical works involved, accompanied by an internal video tour. Smith and Wallwork will be discussing the detailed design challenges of the project.
