Archangel Architects have offered CFCI members the opportunity to visit St Peter & St Paul Church in Bassingbourn, a Grade I listed parish church south of Cambridge partially dating from the 13th century.
This ambitious project addresses the church’s lack of basic facilities—no WC, kitchen, or even running water—through innovative design.
Proposals include a catering kitchen within the tower, a large meeting room with folding glass doors opening into the nave, a welcome space, WCs, and a vestry.
A gallery over the meeting room offers additional seating and dramatic views, while smaller glazed rooms add flexible spaces. The unashamedly modern architectural language reconciles the needs of the worshipping community with the historic character of the building, complemented by a new lighting scheme and underfloor heating. This visit offers a fascinating insight into blending bold contemporary design with heritage conservation.
