Can Modular be Regenerative?

Patrick Usborne, founding director of Perpendicular Architecture

Perpendicular Architecture’s vision for the future is to regain an equilibrium: to actively restore and regenerate our planet and build places for people to reconnect with each other. In collaboration with The Positive+ Collective, its proposal, Positive+ House, is not looking simply to minimise negative impacts but to maximise our positive contribution to society and the environment. Using home-grown Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), it adopts regenerative off-site design solutions in response to the increasingly urgent issue of climate change and biodiversity loss and the social challenges of our time, while also being cost effective.

Modular design and product innovation

Alan Dowdall, timber specialist and associate at Ramboll

Our construction world is moving ever closer to offsite construction methods with the development of modular products playing a key role with how today’s buildings can be completed. As more manufacturers and developers move into modular development the journey of getting to a completed product is not without challenges.  Ramboll have been working with various modular developers over the last few years and will share their experiences in modular design along with suggesting a rethink on our traditional method of design delivery.
