Ferndale Rise

David Mackay Award for Engineering and Sustainability

For this final award, unusually, and perhaps a reflection of the increasingly mainstream character of sustainability, we have no less than four highly commended projects as well as an overall winner.  Each of the commendations are of a particular aspect as follows:

Highly commended for educational value:  Ferndale Rise

Ferndale Rise: A Cambridge 1930s Semi Reborn for a SustainableFuture

Reimagining energy-efficient housing, Ferndale Rise is a living case study designed to educate and inspire. Transformed from EPC D to carbon-negative A, this replicable retrofit shows homeowners the building blocks available for low-carbon renovation.

Judges citation:

“This project, sponsored by the Cambridge Building Society, is a brilliant way of showing how a modest house (in this case a 1930s semi) can be retrofitted to a high environmental standard.  It goes further than this, though, in demonstrating different techniques within the house – all recorded on video – providing learning and guidance to owners and prospective owners.  It’s a truly innovative project by a Building Society and we both commend it and hope it will be copied widely.”
